Japan - From the Bottom to the Top! 2nd Stop - Shikoku

Shikoku is one of Japan's least visited areas. It's a very rural area with very few big towns. I explored the area mostly in a hire car - well I say car.... engine by Daihatsu Design by Postman Pat!

The area has amazing green valleys and gorges with very long windy single track roads where I did well not to put my car over the edge.
My hostel owner couldn't speak English - when I enquired about the state of the road Google Translate came to the rescue!!

Meeting another driver was a nightmare and involved giving lengthy reversing lessons!

The Iya Valley with it's vine rope bridges
Buddhist temple at Konpira - the 1368 steps to the top attract lots of pilgrims!

Konpira town also had a lovely Kabuki Theatre ( very ancient traditonal theatre - a bit like panto) Unfortunately no shows were on when I was there.

The combination of cherry blossom and early morning mist was magical
My journey took me through one of the weirdest little towns I have every been to...Nagoro - Scarecrow Village Read more about it here...Scarecrow Village There are over a hundred life-sized dolls scattered around the village - I only saw one other real person though. Everyone else has left for the cities...the story of rural Japan!

People bow everywhere you go in Japan - even after roadworks!
After Iya Valley I hopped on a ferry and made my way out to Naoshima - known for it's modern art museums and iconic outdoor sculptures..
